Just finished watching the movie and trying to type all of my feelings down. This will be the first draft and could be scattered or raving at times. Please bear with me.
As a Godzilla and Kaiju fan, I had high hopes for this movie. The beginning of the movie showed so much promise but our hopes and interest in the movie died out as soon as it focused on the younger Brody. The cast was superb except for Elizabeth Olsen and that Aaron Taylor-Johnson. They should have never added those two to the movie. It would be a lot superior to have focused on a damaged Bryan Cranston who was trying to hunt for the truth while being haunted by the memories of his dead wife and dead colleagues, but, NO! They wanted "young blood" in the movie along with the patriotic and young American soldier/loving father angle. Why? Because 'murrica!
Looking back on the trailers, they gave the impression of Bryan "Heisenberg" Cranston in a show off against Godzilla. That would have been epic if they settled for that. It was a huge disappointment that that wasn't the case. They falsely led us to believe that part and I don't feel like I can get over it any time soon.
The younger Brody made me want to ragequit and we were actually waiting for him to die throughout the whole movie. We were practically groaning and moaning whenever he comes close to dying but doesn't. The wife and their son didn't help me like the movie either. Both of them were totally unnecessary like the father and the movie could have easily advanced without wasting any screen time on them. It was such a shame Bryan was absent for most of the movie. It would have been more enjoyable without those people mucking it up.
There is nothing wrong with having a human touch or appeal to the movie but they executed it so bad that it made me want to do something else or stop watching it all together. Godzilla's limited screen time was okay in my opinion since having the movie show more of him would only mean lame CGI fights with Godzilla and co. destroying buildings left and right. I just wished they could have made the build up even better. Some of the dialogues were cheesy but I can live with this, since cheesy dialogues are almost staple in the Japanese versions. However, I hope the sequels would be better than this one and without the Brody family please!!!
Final score: 4/10 because of Heisenberg, Godzilla shooting beams out of his mouth and the TV report where they called him the king of the monsters.
